Screenwriters Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin incorporate several useful sub-plots techniques, including Bill meeting with the reluctant Jo in order to get her signature on the divorce papers, a fish-out-of-water fiance, competing scientist rivals, a crew of scientist side-kick characters, an aunt in jeopardy and Jo's determination to combat the force that killed her father.
