On the Waterfront Structure

On the Waterfront has a perfect Act I: immediately placing us in the heart of the story, explaining the rules of the world, and introducing us to the memorable characters and their goals. The shift into a love story contrasts so well with the harsh realities of the waterfront, and establishes Terry's dilemma that culminates Act II. Terry has no option but to confront Johnny Friendly in Act III.
