Memento stands as probably the best use of flashback ever made. Effective, because the organization of the Sequences gives the audience a sense of what Leonard must experience in his every day life due to his retrograde amnesia. Sequences (in color) are delineated by the bracketing of the black and white Scenes which are told forward in time and focus on the case of 'Sammy Jenkis'. Brilliant concept and a wonderful screenplay. For other flashback approaches, compare with Double Indemnity, Saw, Citizen Kane and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. An analogous structure seen in Inception.
