Casablanca Screenplay Sequence-Scene Structure
The Screenplay Summary shows how Casablanca is also one of the best examples of how set-up the most important question to be resolved in a script (i.e. Will Rick leave Casablanca with Ilsa?). But the question only becomes clear at the beginning of Act III. Until then, the Screenplay Summary shows how tension and emotion are created by the interactions of the many unique characters, the events and circumstances they must contend with, and the conflicting choices they must resolve. Note: one character, Rick, essentially solves all the problems for everybody. Scenes are set in a very limited number of locations and the 'action' is through dialogue rather than movement. You can see how this story was originally created as a play. The screenplay also has a book-ended structure as it begins and ends at the airport.

The Screenplay Summary comes with a free 127-page PDF download of the Casablanca screenplay for education purposes.

The Screenplay Summary presents the Sequence-Scene structure of the final movie. Your purchase comes with two different PDF version of the screenplay for Casablanca. One version is dated 6/1/42. The other is undated and contains the following statement:

When production began the script was only half completed, near the end of production the script was literally being written the night before, and in the final days of filming, the dialogue for some scenes was written while shooting was actually in progress and then rushed to the set. Dialogue for the final seconds of the film was even added well after production had been completed. It is therefore accurate to say that no complete production script for Casablanca exists.

The above book  contains the complete screenplay as well as a behind-the-scenes look at how the Oscar-winning movie was made, by one of its writers, Howard Koch. Charles Champlin, Roger Ebert, Umberto Eco, and others contribute incisive analyses of the movie's timeless appeal, and twenty-five beautifully reproduced stills capture the dramatically charged scenes of this true American classic.
